IntegrAted SolutioNs for DecarbOnisation and Smartification of Islands

About Ianos

Decarbonisation
of Islands

There are more than 2,700 islands all over Europe and each island plays an important role in the transition away from fossil fuels towards a cleaner energy. Each island has its own conditions, depending on its geographic location, (political) regulations, and infrastructure and each island has its own specific energy-related challenges. The IANOS project contributes to solving these challenges.

Pilot
Islands

IANOS selected the islands of Ameland (Netherlands) and Terceira (Portugal) to serve as “Pilot Islands” because they both represent common EU challenges. After the initial phase, IANOS will implement the solutions on three “fellow Islands” to validate the replicability potential of the results of the test islands. The fellow islands selected are: Lampedusa (Italy), Bora Bora (French Polynesia) and Nisyros (Greece).

Utilising Energy Flexibility

We are developping a Centralized Dispatcher which is responsible for creating the optimal dispatch and control of all assets in the field trials at the islands of Ameland and Terceira. The goal of the Centralized Dispatcher is to utilise the energy flexibility offered by devices such as (Hybrid) heat pumps and match that with an increasing amount of intermittent renewable energy production from wind and solar PV.

RECAP CAPACITY BUILDING TRAINING SESSION ON TERCEIRA ISLAND

Energy transition on islands is not only a matter of technology, but also about involving local citizens and stakeholders in the decision-making process. They are the ones who can shape the energy transition on their island! In this context, several training sessions took place last week on Terceira, Azores. Three training sessions were provided by New Energy Coalition, EDA, Regional Government of the Azores, UNINOVA and with guest speaker CleanWatts.
Benefits for the EU
Decarbonised and self-sufficiencent islands with renewable energy

IANOS focuses on maximum provision and utilisation of flexibility and self-sufficiency through the use of distributed renewable energy and storage technologies. IANOS streamlines the decision-making process towards tailor-made solutions taking into account the specific conditions of islands through the Island Energy Planning and Transition Suite and artificial intelligence based virtual power plant. In this way, IANOS will demonstrate a rich portfolio of solutions towards full decarbonisation, increasing the share of renewable energy sources in the energy mix and exploiting the resources of islands, including geothermal, wind, tidal and solar energy.
