There are more than 2,700 islands all over Europe that play an important role in the transition away from fossil fuels towards cleaner energy and deliver on the EU’s Paris Agreement commitments for reducing greenhouse gas emissions as stated in the “Clean Energy for All Europeans” package. The islands are promoted as platforms for pilot initiatives on clean energy transition to be showcased as success stories at international level. These islands all have their specific energy-related challenges. The IANOS project contributes to solving these challenges.
IANOS solution consists of the development of a Virtual Power Plant (VVP) based on Artificial Intelligence. The project’s VVP will consider all island energy streams and act within multiple timeframes, offering ancillary services, congestion management, minimising renewable generation curtailment, deferring grid reinforcement and allowing the integration of innovative solutions such as flywheels and hybrid transformers.
IANOS develops solutions adapted to the most relevant energy resources: solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, hydro, green gas, and waste. Moreover, IANOS will consider multiple storage mediums (electricity, hydrogen, thermal) and types of end-users (transport – including vehicle-to-grid –, industry, residential, and services).
IANOS enables enhanced grid operation monitoring through novel smart grid components and resources forecasting tools, especially at regional and local level, and by using Artificial Intelligence algorithms and pattern recognition intelligence for deploying predictive mechanisms that tackle the accuracy needs per service.
IANOS tests novel business models, based on multi-stakeholder collaboration in different contexts and empowered by crowdfunding-enabling solutions.
IANOS will test novel Demand-Side-Management (DSM) and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) transactive energy schemes within the Virtual Power Plant framework, delivering new societal benefits and exploiting active flexibility possibilities for prosumers at any scale.
IANOS Energy Planning and Transition Suite will enhance green investments, empowering islanders to become part of the real decision-making process.
IANOS will establish proportionate exemptions from certain regulatory obligations that apply to mainland energy systems and deliver tailor-made regulatory approaches.
