The Centre for New Energy Technologies is a subsidiary of the EDP Group, a vertically integrated utility company, with the mission to create value through collaborative research and development in the energy sector. EDP is the project coordinator of IANOS and leads the deployment of the energy solutions in Terceira (Portugal).
The UNINOVA Research Institute is a multidisciplinary, independent, and non-profit research institute that pursues excellence in scientific research, technical development, advanced training and education. UNINOVA’s main role in IANOS is related to the characterisation and use of energy flexibility, including smart distribution management systems and flexibility control algorithms to perform demand response tasks, and the development of a power electronics Energy Router.
Efacec Energia is part of Efacec Power Solutions, the largest Portuguese group in the electromechanical area, and is active in the field of energy, providing energy solutions for power generation, transmission, distribution and power systems automation. For IANOS, EFACEC will develop a novel distribution transformer with the capability of adjusting and regulating the output voltage during operation, to cope with increased consumption variability and increased installed PV generation capacity for Terceira (Portugal).
EDA is the electricity utility of the Azores and is responsible for the production and acquisition, transmission, distribution and commercialisation of electricity in all the nine islands of the Azorean archipelago. EDA’s main role in IANOS is to manage the interface in the relationship between all partners involved in the application, including target customers, and independent producers.
Efacec Electric Mobility, affiliated with Efacec Power Solutions, is a worldwide manufacturer of Electric Vehicle charging solutions. For IANOS, Efacec Electric Mobility will develop, supply and deploy the Vehicle-to-Grid electric vehicle charging units needed on Terceira (Portugal) along with the required software for the infrastructure that will support the Vehicle-to-X capabilities.
The Regional Secretariat for Energy, Environment and Tourism is part of the Azorean Government and responsible for all energy-related matters, with the mission of providing a secure, accessible and sustainable energy system. Its main role in IANOS is to ensure a smooth implementation of solutions in the Azores, coordinating all the necessary local actions. It will also ensure the involvement of the local community and share the project results through its international partners.
VPS is an innovative technology player with extensive knowledge on energy management systems that actively contributes to the low carbon economy by providing energy consumers and utilities the tools for the digital transformation of the energy sector. They will be the technological provider and responsible for integration and commissioning of the complete system. In addition, they will participate in the development of the Virtual Power Plant platform.
From the innovation hub of Finland’s Aalto University, Teraloop have leveraged the knowledge and support of world leading experts. They drive the development with a core engineering team, drawing expertise from leading consultants and manufacturers. Teraloop will participate as technical partner in the deployment, realisation and monitoring of the energy solutions of Terceira (Portugal).
Sunamp was founded to respond to the need for low to zero-carbon heating, cooling and hot water systems in domestic and commercial settings. Sunamp develops, manufactures, and distributes a novel, high-efficiency heat energy storage and processing technology: The Heat Battery. Within IANOS, Sunamp will be a technology provider, as its heat batteries will be used to ensure optimal performance of the thermal systems. Sunamp will be involved also in the sizing and design, integration with technologies from other partners, installation and monitoring of the thermal storages.
BeON is a developer and manufacturer of industry leading microinverters and pioneering plug & play complete solar kits. For IANOS, BeOn will use its knowledge of grid controlled photovoltaic plug inverters to provide PV panels connected with microinverters with sophisticated communication capabilities, in order to respond in real-time to grid operator commands.
Ameland is a small island and municipality in the Wadden Sea Region in the northern part of the Netherlands. The Wadden Sea Region, known for its unique and vulnerable nature, has been designated World Heritage Site since 2009. 3,600 inhabitants live permanently on the island. Within IANOS the municipality of Ameland facilitates all experiments in the context of Sustainable Ameland as well as initiatives of individuals and entrepreneurs on the island. In addition, Gemeente Ameland initiates and facilitates the process of citizen participation in the sustainable development of the island.
New Energy Coalition brings together researchers, entrepreneurs and policymakers to boost innovation, achieve breakthroughs in technology and knowledge and help change people’s mindset and behaviour with regard to the energy transition. New Energy Coalition leads IANOS Energy Cooperatives and Stakeholders Engagement and is in charge of development and organisation of training sessions for islands looking for decarbonisation, best practices from citizen engagement and replicable business models, and crowdfunding approaches that foster deep decarbonisation of energy systems.
TNO is the largest Dutch independent research organisation and one of the largest in Europe. TNO carries out research to achieve impact on different themes addressing societal challenges. For IANOS, TNO is technology provider for technical and commercial flexibility aggregator companies who will capture the value of the available flexibility on the islands. Moreover TNO will be in charge of the system wide solution integration models in order to further develop energy transition tracking and monitoring models and tools.
Alliander is an energy network company and is a partner of IANOS without budget. Even though Alliander does not require an EU contribution, the organisation is fully committed to the initiative and will provide their input whenever necessary to make the project a success. In particular, Alliander will fulfil its legal task as grid operator for Ameland and other Wadden Islands and will follow all activities in the energy solutions that are carried out on Ameland.
AEC, local energy cooperative on the Island of Ameland since 2009, was established to realise community self-sufficiency through reduction of energy usage on the island (focussing on behaviour and implementation of energy saving solutions). They also provide local generated renewable energy derived from diverse energy sources, including solar, wind, tidal and geothermal. AEC will be involved in IANOS to engage local stakeholders and will be owner of the renewable energy sources solar park.
SuWoTec was founded in 2014 by social entrepreneurs who foresaw and studied the needs for a sustainable circular economy. Their drive is to accelerate sustainable and circular technologies, implement them into day to day business and create a sustainable planet for generations to come. For IANOS, SuWoTec’s main activity consists of the development and instalment of a 120kWh (50kW charging capacity) battery close to a new site with 13 houses in the city of Nes (Ameland).
The Hanze University of Applied Sciences (Hanze UAS) has locations in Groningen, Assen, Leeuwarden and Amsterdam with approximately 28,000 students, 2,700 staff members, and over 50 professorships, including 8 professorships on Energy. For IANOS, Hanze UAS will lead several activities: impact assessment, business models and service innovation, development of a community and citizen engagement toolbox and monitoring platform. For this reason, it will also be involved in the community and stakeholder engagement monitoring on Ameland and in the activities for the stakeholder and citizens empowerment in decision-making processes.
Neroa supports companies to design and implement smart grids. Neroa will be responsible for the development of the Virtual Power Plant framework which will be developed and installed with intelligence and forecasting software for IANOS. They also support the development of optimal urban planning tools for fast decarbonisation.
Repowered provides solutions for flexibility challenges arising from the introduction of substantial amounts of renewable energy systems. For IANOS, Repowered acts as an aggregator to optimise the produced renewable energy sources on Ameland (Netherlands) on financial and social level. In close cooperation with Neroa and TNO, Repowered will develop smart algorithms and services for the Virtual Power Plant to optimise self-consumption, grid stability, decarbonisation of the transport, large industrial loads and the heating network, and possible share of renewable energy source within the existing network.
SeaQurrent brings tidal energy to the market. The company has been working on the development of its TidalKite technology to harness energy from low velocity tidal streams in shallow waters since late 2013. The TidalKite technology is based on an underwater kite operated perpendicular to a water stream that creates a traction force that is converted into electricity. For IANOS, SeaQurrent will adapt its TidalKite technology to make it suitable for deployment near Ameland (Netherlands), enable integration in the island energy system to enable tidal energy production from this location.
Bareau is a research and development company that has developed a new innovative technology to produce green gas in a single step. This bio-technology is called Autogenerative High Pressure Digestion (AHPD) and will be built on a practical scale on the island of Ameland (Netherlands) in 2020. Bareau is the process technology provider and operator of the AHPD plant ensuring that extra substrates like swill, hydrogen and carbon dioxide, will be treated and green gas production will be scaled up.
GasTerra is a gas trading company that operates internationally and is based in Groningen. For IANOS, GasTerra financially supports the development of the small-scale high-pressure digester and provides knowledge support for the development of the hydrogen add-on when the initial concept has been proven. GasTerra will also share market dynamics insights for the different parts of the total project.
The Municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa (Italy) administers the territory of the Pelagie archipelago which includes Lampedusa. For IANOS, they will provide relevant information for the activities linked to the archipelago and local perspectives. They will also involve local stakeholders towards the adaptation of the replication of the proposed energy solutions on the island of Lampedusa, thus guaranteeing their future uptake.
The National Research Council supports the Italian islands’ transition towards a greener paradigm: energy efficiency, environmental sustainability and energy and waste flows optimisation. For IANOS, CNR supports the Municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa in the replication of the proposed energy solutions. In addition, CNR will provide insights derived from knowledge generated in years of activities in collaboration with Italian islands, and will work on the environmental benefits and impacts and the realisation of the replication and scalability plan of Lampedusa (Italy).
The Municipality of Bora Bora includes the islands of Bora Bora and the atoll of Tupai, located in French Polynesia, in the Leeward group of the Society Islands archipelago. It has a population of 10,500 and an area of 41.5 km². As the local public authority, the Municipality of Bora Bora will facilitate the project developed by Akuo Energy on the island. They will support the political legitimacy of the project by providing knowledge of the local context and opportunities, and will guarantee the relevance of the project for local development and environmental preservation.
Akuo Energy is a French renewable energy global player and an independent power producer which exclusively develops renewable energy plants. Akuo Energy operates 64 power plants worldwide, representing over 1 GW of capacity, composed of solar, wind, hydro and biomass facilities. Akuo Energy will implement the replication of the proposed energy solutions on Bora Bora together with Bora Bora’s municipality as a follower island.
Nisyros is a volcanic Greek island and municipality located in the southeast Aegean Sea. It is situated between the islands of Kos and Tilos, with an area of 41.6 km2, and a population of 1,000. The Municipality of Nisyrians will be involved in the replication of the proposed energy solutions on Nisyros. Acting as the local authority, the Municipality of Nisyros will have a crucial role in the successful implementation of the solutions and ensuring citizens’ engagement in the decision-making processes.
The Centre for Research and Technology Hellas is one of the largest research groups. It promotes research, development and innovation by conducting high quality research and developing innovative products and services. CERTH has strong partnerships with industry and strategic collaborations with academia and other research and technology organisations in Greece and abroad. CERTH is the technical coordinator of IANOS and will lead several activities: technical and innovation management, development of the crowd-equity/funding component for the IEPT toolset, development of the necessary forecasting mechanisms, utilising artificial intelligence meta-learning models for both demand and renewable energy sources. Moreover, it will employ its expertise into intelligent clustering and segmentation of prosumers to implement the virtual power plant aggregation & classification component and it will draft the System ICT Architecture. CERT will also participate in equipping the FEID-PLUs with capabilities to control on field vehicle-to-grid and storage assets. Finally, CERTH will support the replication of the proposed energy solutions for the island of Nisyros (Greece).
The Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute is a founding member of Centre for Research and Technology Hellas. The institute is classified among the Institutes of Excellence in Greece and employs a scientific staff of about 250 people. For IANOS, CPERI will form the definition of the most representative and suitable key performance indicators for island energy systems and will develop and applicate energy and environmental based algorithms and toolkits, that will be integrated as key components of the decision support toolset to support the replication and scalability of IANOS technologies.
Etra Investigacion y Desarrollo is the hi-tech unit within ETRA Group and one of the leading industrial groups in Spain. Etra’s mission is to put the most advanced solution and services on the market, either directly or through the companies of the Group. Etra will analyse the IANOS market, the cost benefit and effectiveness assessment, and the implementation of the business models. Furthermore, ETRA will be responsible for cybersecurity issues and will take part in many other tasks in the project.
Ingegneria Informatica is the holding company of the Engineering Group and is the leading IT group in Italy and in the top 10 IT groups in Europe. With 65 branch offices in Italy, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Republic of Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Argentina, Brazil and the USA, Engineering employs 11,000 people. Engineering’s role in IANOS is an advanced role that will involve the operational framework and the replication and scalability of energy solutions on EU Islands.
RINA is a global corporation that provides services across the energy, marine, certification, transport and infrastructure, and industry sectors through a global network of 200 offices in 70 countries. RINA will contribute to IANOS through its operational company RINA Consulting. RINA will mainly be involved in the dissemination and communication activities of IANOS, as well as in the impact assessment and the market analysis. In addition, RINA will support the replication of the proposed energy solutions for the island of Lampedusa (Italy) as follower islands and will take part in the replication analysis.
EREF is the European federation of national renewable energy associations from EU Member States, representing all renewable energy technologies and defends the interests of independent power, fuel and heat producers from renewable sources and promotes non-discriminatory access to the energy market. For IANOS, EREF’s main role is twofold – to execute tasks related to the communication, dissemination and promotion of projects results, in particular at EU level, and to act as hub transferring knowledge and information at national and EU level, including between the IANOS project partners and relevant EU and national decision-makers and stakeholders.
HAEE is the Greek affiliate of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE), which is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, research organisation, dedicated to providing an interdisciplinary forum for the exchange of knowledge, information & experience among energy industry experts, academics, government and other professionals interested in energy economics. HAEE will be involved in the communication and dissemination of IANOS’ results and market analysis and business model development.
UBITECH ENERGY was founded by a mixture of experienced ICT consultants and energy research innovators, with a long track record in the identification, design, development and commercialisation of research and innovation smart energy projects. For IANOS, UBITECH ENERGY will take on the development and prevalidation of the energy planning & transition decision support toolset. Furthermore, they will participate in identifying the requirements of the islands and the KPIs definition.
