On May 29th, an international group of summer school students visited the pilot island of Ameland. Students from 11 different countries were welcomed by Johan Kiewiet, former director of the Amelander Energy Cooperative. Johan guided the students through Ameland’s energy landscape and presented upcoming projects such as the Tidal Kite and their second solar park.

At the municipal building, sustainable development policy officer Luc van Tiggelen welcomed the students and discussed the municipality’s role in Ameland’s inclusive transition to a sustainable energy supply.

Public participation expert Wiebo Lamain from project partner Hanzehogeschool Groningen presented the IANOS community engagement strategy in an interactive session. Wiebo’s presentation highlighted the importance of community networks and the inclusion of Attitudes, Beliefs, Knowledge, Values, Trust, and other essential behavioural factors that can determine the success of community-owned energy projects.

It was an inspiring day full of valuable insights for the students!
