We are happy to share the publication of the paper “Energy Analysis and Environmental Impact Assessment for Self-Sufficient Non-Interconnected Islands: The Case of Nisyros Island.” This study addresses the energy challenges faced by non-interconnected islands (NII), which are heavily reliant on fossil fuels.

Focusing on the Greek island of Nisyros, the paper examines sustainable scenarios using innovative technologies. These scenarios aim to achieve energy self-sufficiency targets of up to 50% by 2030 and 95% by 2050.

The findings reveal significant benefits, including an 88% reduction in fossil fuel costs and a 38% decrease in CO2 emissions. The study demonstrates that NIIs can reduce their reliance on thermal energy and enhance self-sufficiency with local renewable resources, while ensuring grid stability.
