Home » Sustainability in Action: Excursion to pilot island Ameland
Ameland is more than a scenic Dutch island. It’s a leading example of how local communities embrace renewable energy. That’s why New Energy Academy (a brand of project partner New Energy Coalition) is organising an excursion to the island on Tuesday 24 April. This day trip offers hands-on insights into the island’s journey toward a fossil-free future by exploring Ameland’s groundbreaking sustainability projects.
The tour is led by Luc van Tiggelen from Gemeente Ameland, a key figure in the region’s energy transition and part of the IANOS project. With his in-depth knowledge, Luc will guide participants through Ameland’s key energy sites. Each stop reveals how innovation and community efforts are shaping a resilient, sustainable island.
Ameland proudly hosts several forward-thinking energy initiatives. The trip includes visits to:
This isn’t just an island tour—it’s a look into the future. Ameland acts as a real-world lab for renewable solutions. Every project on the island is part of a greater mission: to create a fossil-free, energy-efficient community.
The potential lies in integration. Once all these systems interconnect, Ameland can evolve into a fully functional smart energy grid. This would make it a model for island communities in the EU.
The Academy works closely with the University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences (also partner in the project). Their programmes equip students with real-world knowledge and hands-on skills. Although student-focused, the Academy also welcomes (young) professionals. The excursion has been well received by the Academy’s supporters and there is no space left for the excursion. So, it promises to be a high-energy trip!
